Don Mattia Tomasoni, the Deputy Postulator, writes:
“Sunday 3rd March would have been Giulia Gabrieli’s twenty-second birthday. On that day, her relatives and friends gathered in the Shrine of Our Lady of the Fields in Stezzano, a place loved by Giulia, to celebrate the Holy Mass together. The Gospel talked about the famous wisdom note that every tree is recognized by its fruits: “every tree is recognized by its fruit: figs are not gathered from thorns, nor grapes are harvested from a bramble. The good man brings forth good from the good treasure of his heart “(cf. Lk 6: 39-45).
It seemed to me a precious image for what we are experiencing: the tree of the Church, in its millenary story, with its big branches and its slightly knotty bark -but with the ever fresh sap that flows inside it, goes on bearing good fruit. These are Saints: men and women who have let themselves be fascinated by the Gospel in their stories, have met Lord, giving rise to the wonderful masterpiece of freedom and Mercy in their lives. There are so many fruits, more than we are able to recognize, in the common and daily folds of our story. There are some of them, however, that the Church almost feels the need to show more proudly, like the proud tree with its most beautiful fruits.
Giulia is one of these fruits: a few months ago the Bishop, gathering the testimony of a widespread reputation for holiness born during and after Giulia’s life, had mentioned the possibility of starting the cause of her beatification. After the first steps to check its feasibility, on Sunday 7th April the Church of Bergamo will officially begin the diocesan phase of the beatification process: at 8.30 pm in the Sanctuary of Stezzano, Bishop Francesco will officiate a moment of prayer in which the permission granted by the Holy See and the designations of the members of the Diocesan Tribunal members and of those who will take care of the cause will be read, with their respective oaths.
In this first phase the aim will be at gathering all the documentation proving the “heroic” exercise of virtues by this Servant of God. Firstly, Giulia’s published writings have already been collected and examined by the censor theologians , who, besides tracing her spiritual profile, as it emerges from her writings, will check that there is nothing against faith and Catholic morality in them. A second type of sources concerns each document concerning Giulia and what was born around her, like the “Con Giulia” organisation and its activities. This great collection will done by the Historical Commission which will have to draw up a final documented report. Finally, a large set of material is composed of many testimonies of those witnesses who knew her and who will be questioned by the Ecclesiastical Court.
At the end of the diocesan phase, all the collected material will be sent to Rome, to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, to be analyzed by some people in charge. The work will be long and done with accuracy and precision. It does not mean to be a mere bureaucratic complication that tooks the freshness of the holiness testimony away , but it is the concrete way chosen by the Church to guarantee the authenticity of the testimony by making sure that it is not lost, and that it can be enjoyed then, with all its depth and the truth it deserves.” (Don Mattia Tomasoni – Deputy Postulator)
